Spiritual Rebirth Illuminated at Winter Solstice By C. Austin
“At winter solstice, the sun will momentarily hang at the southernmost point of its annual voyage and then turn again northward.
From the dawn of mankind’s observance of the heavens this event has sparked the rebirth of gods and the retinue of symbols that inhabit both our conscious and unconscious lives.
Mythologically, the winter solstice is the moment when the Goddess gives birth to the Divine child, the new solar year.
The Divine child grows to become the consort of the Goddess, later to die and be reborn again at the next winter solstice.
The creative act of the Goddess and her consort gift our world with the immensely rich experience of spiritual and vegetative mystery.
The birth-death-birth cycle originating here fuels many of the world’s great religions.
The winter solstice offers us a moment of spiritual confluence.
As the solstice occurs the worlds of eternity and humanity align,
providing a conduit for the altogether different light that both flows from and pierces to our centre.
Darkness, pain and outdated ways of thinking are released and light infuses the psyche with the illumination of a new way.
This holiday season, remember the Old Ways and the promise of light from a star that is traveling to you from 93 million miles away.

❄️We have arrived at the depth of Winter. On December 21st, the Sun will reach the Tropic of Capricorn, the lowest point in the Sun’s journey south of the equator.
And it will stay there for 3 days as the ‘sun stands still’ before it begins its journey back North for the year.

For those of you who live in the southern hemisphere,
☀️️Happy Summer Solstice! It’s the marriage of heaven and Earth for you.
•
❄️We celebrate the Winter Solstice as a festival of the Rebirth of the Sun, or the birth of the Divine Child of Light.
The mystery of this time of year in the northern hemisphere is that in the darkest times, the Light is reborn.
We have not only arrived at this yearly celebration, but we’ve also arrived at a collective ‘dark time’ and we have to re-birth our faith in life,
our hopes for a better future and our determination to ‘make it so’ as my hero, Captain Picard would say.

❄️Many years ago, as I watched my children grow up in an already darkening world,
I wrote a Winter Solstice story about a mother who went in search of the Light, so that her children would know it and be grounded in it.
That Light is the awareness of our own destiny, our inner knowing of our divinity and our responsibility to our humanity to help re-shape the world.
As the mother searches for the Light, she encounters greed and selfishness, but also hope and magic.
It is the magical power of the imagination which leads her to the Light at last,
and it is an open-hearted love that nurtures and carries the Child of Light back into the world to share it.

❄️That’s the grace and the gift we’re given each Winter Solstice. To birth and nurture the Divine Light within us,
as well as to search for the Light like the Magi,
the Wise Men who came with gifts for the Christ Child.
What a shame if we turn away from this task!
For then we spend another year imprisoned in a patriarchal worldview that wants us to stay asleep
and unaware of our ability to die to the old so we can birth the future.

All throughout these months
as the shadows
have lengthened,
this blessing has been
gathering itself,
making ready,
preparing for
this night.
It has practiced
walking in the dark,
traveling with
its eyes closed,
feeling its way
by memory
by touch
by the pull of the moon
even as it wanes.
So believe me
when I tell you
this blessing will
reach you
even if you
have not light enough
to read it;
it will find you
even though you cannot
see it coming.
You will know
the moment of its
arriving
by your release
of the breath
you have held
so long;
a loosening
of the clenching
in your hands,
of the clutch
around your heart;
a thinning
of the darkness
that had drawn itself
around you.
This blessing
does not mean
to take the night away
but it knows
its hidden roads,
knows the resting spots
along the path,
knows what it means
to travel
in the company
of a friend.
So when
this blessing comes,
take its hand.
Get up.
Set out on the road
you cannot see.
This is the night
when you can trust
that any direction
you go,
you will be walking
toward the dawn.
